Q: Can I reset the Surge Protector?
A: No. When a surge is large enough to blow the circuit in the Surge Protector, it will need to be replaced. You cannot reset it.
Q: How will the customer know that the surge protector isn't working anymore - that it's done its job and needs to be replaced?
A: There is a Protection Indicator Light on the Surge Protector (a green LED). That LED is lit when the Surge Protector is working. This light will go off and the GDO will not work if the Surge Protector is blown (AC power is no longer available to the GDO).
Q: The garage door opener won't work anymore - what is wrong?
A: Check the Protection Indicator light on the Surge Protector. If it is not lit up, the Surge Protector has taken a surge large enough to blow its circuit and will need to be replaced. Simply remove the AC power from the Surge Protector and plug it directly into the outlet. The low voltage wires can remain plugged into the Surge Protector. Replace the Surge Protector immediately. Run the GDO to make sure all safety systems are working properly.
Q: Once the surge protector is blown, will the operator continue to receive power and run?
A: No. The catastrophic circuit blows in the surge protector during a fatal surge. This disconnects all power to the GDO in order to protect the GDO electronics. In order to operate the GDO, you will need to disconnect the AC cord from the surge protector and plug it directly into the wall. The low voltage wires can remain plugged into the surge protector until you replace it with a new one as they are protected by a separate board and will still operate.
Q: How does the Surge Protector protect the IR sensors and the wall control?
A: There are two separate boards in the Surge Protector. The main board is 120V and protects the AC line to the Logic Board. The second, smaller board with the quick connects protects only the low voltage electronics and in most cases will not be affected by a power surge to the AC line.
Q: If the Surge Protector is installed correctly and the logic board is still damaged in a power surge, how does the warranty work?
A: The LiftMaster Surge Protector carries a 5 year limited connected equipment warranty (Connected Equipment must be a LiftMaster GDO from 1994 to present). If the Surge Protector is blown and the logic board is also damaged, the 5 year warranty will cover the cost of that logic board for 5 years from purchase and installation of the Surge Protector on the GDO.
Q: Does the product come with extra bell wire to wire the low voltage electronics from the Surge Protector to the power head?
A: No. LiftMaster does not provide extra bell wire.
Q: How many surges can the Surge Protector handle before it blows its circuits?
A: There is no set amount of surges. The nature of surge protectors is that they can take a power surge and absorb it, thereby protecting the connected equipment (in this case, the GDO). However, every time a surge protector takes a power surge, it loses some of its capacity to protect. A large enough power surge or if the protector has taken many small hits and just can't take anymore, will take out the circuit, cutting off power to the GDO and protecting the logic board. It depends on the severity of the power surge or how many it has taken - we don't state a limit. |
